The Full Story
As a therapist, I have chosen not to accept insurance for a few reasons all centered by my professional belief in individualized and person centered care.
By limiting the number of, frequency of, and duration of sessions, types of therapy, and therapeutic modalities covered, insurance companies can interfere with the therapeutic process. I utilize an empowerement approach during therapy sessions which highlights one's ability to make informed decisions in all aspects of their treatment.

Insurance companies often require a mental health diagnosis in order to cover therapy sessions. Not all individuals who seek therapy meet diagnostic criteria outlined by the DSM-5, which is a therapists diagnostic manual outlining symptoms needed to make a diagnosis. Additionally, a mental health diagnosis can be very stigmatizing for individuals. Some individuals may be empowered by their diagnosis while others have a more negative experience discovering their diagnosis. Whichever place one falls in, not all individuals would like for their insurance companies to have their mental health diagnosis on file for a variety of reasons. Not accepting insurance allows me to maintain complete confidentiality.
